Charlie Sheen’s latest video is something of an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, bundled in weirdness and topped with some classy black-rimmed glasses. The recently canned star of CBS’ Two and a Half Men, whose drug and sex-related escapades lead the network to let him go, has been giving media interviews and posting videos online in what appears to be a highly intoxicated and inscrutable state.
In the midst of all the hubbub, Sheen has broken a previously non-existent Guinness World Record by becoming the first person to reach 1 million Twitter followers within 24 hours. This is part of what leads us to think that Sheen’s latest video might be PR genius rather than sheer drug-fueled insanity.
For one thing, the wild-haired, ranting Sheen of previous videos is replaced by a much cleaner look, with combed back hair, dark-rimmed glasses. Most importantly, he appears to be reading off a prepared script in front of him.
While the words coming out of his mouth still sound like amateur beat poetry with a healthy helping of gibberish (he refers to himself as “the Malibu messiah” and “the warlock of your jealous face” and lambasts his foes at CBS) there seems to be a more calculated message behind them.
Perhaps Sheen is crafting a self-referential farce to keep the media coverage coming in and maybe score a new job thanks to his popularity and social media prowess a la Conan O’Brian. And with rumors already circulating that CBS might be weighing Rob Lowe or John Stamos as Sheen’s replacements, it’s important that he test our hypothesis that the right eyeglasses can help land a job.
