This weekend, Saturday Night Live decided that, rather than devote coverage to March Madness they would refocus America’s attention on a new breed of competition. Spoofing CBS’ Selection Sunday, Kenan Thompson and Jason Sudeikis analyzed the top contenders for Actual Madness, “the tournament to determine who is the craziest person in the world.”
Starting out with the North Africa bracket (pictured above) they discussed the “merits” of various bespectacled dictators of the region including Muammar Gaddafi of Libya in his designer frames and a sour-faced Omar al-Bashir of Sudan. Gaddafi’s sartorial style is characterized by his oversize sunglasses and outlandish safari suits, and this along with the civil war in Libya made him a strong contender for the title. Thompson quipped “it’s like Tony Shaloub had a baby with E.T.”
Later in the sketch, Thompson and Sudeikis bring their lampoonery to bear on another key division in the contest to see who’s craziest: Hollywood. The number one seed in that category was of course, celebrity hot mess of the moment, Charlie Sheen. Bill Hader does a spot-on impression of Sheen in some of his more tweaked out videos, so of course he’s not sporting any eyewear that was part of Sheen’s cleaned up look.
