You don’t have to be an Internet-savvy tween with a smartphone fused to your fingers to know what a meme is. Even if you’ve never heard the word before, you’re surely familiar with the concept of a cultural nugget or idea that spreads rapidly from person to person. And Ben Huh, the bespectacled CEO of I Can Has Cheezeburger?, a network of sites that cull the Web for the next big meme, has just solidified his role as the king of the genre by acquiring the website Know Your Meme for a low seven-figure sum.
Over the years, ICHC has appropriated and popularized memes such as LOLCats, featuring pictures of cats in unusual poses, with spelling-challenged captions, and FAIL blog where they capture moments of exceeding human stupidity and incompetence.
While Huh, did not start ICHC, he purchased it in 2007 for $2 million, which seemed like a ludicrous amount of money at the time for a website with pictures of cats, even a heavily trafficked one. But Huh has since grown the site beyond it’s feline fixation and recently brought in $30 million in outside funding.
Huh can often be seen in thick, black, designer frames from Prada, that are sometimes accompanied by a plush hat in the shape of a Cheezeburger. Needless to say, we applaud his choice of eyewear far more than his preferred headgear.
