Later today, the Butler University Bulldogs and the Virginia Commonwealth Rams will face off in Houston in the Final Four. The athleticism and endurance of the players will be tested but so will the strength of Butler coach Brad Stevens’ lucky glasses.
Stevens took the underdog Bulldogs to the national championship last year, and he’s been known to put real stock in superstitions to help keep his team on a winning streak. Students report that the team has been eating the same pre-game meal of Spaghetti, garlic bread, chicken, baked potato, and fruit salad for a long time now. The team also avoids or favors certain restaurants or hotels if they’ve had good luck while staying or eating there.
Stevens was even reported as saying that he wouldn’t switch from his designer frames to contact lenses even if his doctor told him he had to. That sounds like true dedication even if it’s medically inadvisable. There’s certainly a lot riding on outcome of these last remaining games including the professional future of the student players and even the financial future of Butler or any other winning team as an institution.
What’s more the glasses have become a big hit with the fans. And who knows, maybe that positive crowd energy will be enough to propel the team over the top this year.
