Summer has the effect of making life seem more fun and carefree. Sunglasses are an extension of that lifestyle feeling; because with the right pair, you can add flair to any outfit while simultaneously protecting your eyes from the sun. While you are out shopping for your perfect set of summer shades, there are three items to keep in mind: UV protection, bigger is better, and lens type.
1. UV Protection: The most important rule when shopping for sunglasses is to make sure the lenses are 99%-100% UV protected. Similar to the concept of SPF, UV protection shields the eyes from sun radiation. Too much exposure to UV-A or UV-B rays in a small time frame can cause photokeratitis which is “sunburn to the eyes.” The label attached to the frames or on the lens itself will inform you of what degree of protection each pair of sunglasses offers. Fortunately for us fashionistas, UV protection comes in an easier and more stylish form than the greasy, annoying sunscreen.
2. Bigger is Better: Ever have friends make fun of how big your sunglasses are or call you bug eyes? Well, the joke is on them because the movie star look provides more protection not only for your eyes, but for your skin as well. If you are very active outside, then you should invest in a pair of sunglasses that have lenses that wrap around the frame. Who knew sporty could be so glamorous?
3. Pick the Perfect Lens: Lenses for your sunglasses are more than just another way to showcase style. Different lens colors and types will help you see better in the sun. Polarized lenses are essential to reducing glare, especially when you are driving or around water. Lens colors also affect how you see. If this is your primary concern, opt for shades with gray lenses, as gray will not distort any color. Brown and green lenses are viable options, too. If you play sports, copper lenses are great for golf and blue and green lenses are perfect for tennis.
Sunglasses are essential for protecting and maintaining your eye health and it is recommended that you wear them all year long. So, if you keep the tips above in mind when purchasing your next pair of sunglasses, you can have even more fun in the sun!
