Eye Healthy Thanksgiving Dishes

Eye Healthy Food

Gobble Gobble!  It’s that time of year again for yams, pumpkin pie, stuffing, honey-baked ham, mashed potatoes, gravy and of course, turkey!  Not only do traditional Thanksgiving meals bring the whole family together, they also help maintain the quality of your eyesight and vision for years to come.  With so many delicious dishes to choose from, Cohen’s Fashion Optical selected a few classics that will leave your eyes healthy, happy, and searching for more.

Sweet potatoes; yes please!  This deep orange delicacy is packed with beta-carotene, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.  Essential for your optical health, these vitamins distort the process of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) from developing in your eye’s cornea and retina.  Vitamin C also decreases your chances of developing cataracts.

Cranberry sauce is the perfect side to any Thanksgiving dish.  If it is your favorite item on the menu, you’re in luck!  Packed with Vitamin A and C, cranberry sauce prevents the formation of cataracts and AMD.  Cataracts and AMD are known to cause severe vision loss overtime, so don’t feel guilty about helping yourself to another serving!  This super berry also ranks first in antioxidant capacity per gram and is linked to improved urinary health, reduced Alzheimer’s risk, and protection against liver, breast, and colon cancers.

Don’t neglect the greens this Thanksgiving!  Green bean casserole, asparagus, brussels sprouts, spinach, and leafy green salads all provide excellent sources of lutein and zeaxanthin.  These nutrients prevent cataracts and AMD even if they are smothered in butter.  Just remember, the greener they are; the better they are for your eyes!

Lastly, it’s not Turkey Day without the turkey!  America’s favorite big bird is loaded with tons of zinc which serves to reduce the risk of AMD and the development and progression of cataracts.  Sure it will make you lethargic, but don’t be afraid to slice off an extra piece…or two.  Just go easy on the gravy!

This Thanksgiving, don’t be afraid to let your eyes do the eating.  Treat yourself to seconds and thirds of these savory dishes and enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie.  Jam packed with Vitamin A, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, this sweet treat is the ultimate eye healthy dish.  Indulge, enjoy and relax.  You can be sure your eyes will thank you later!
