The Markings of #JulyGuy Style

We’ve dedicated the month of July to Men’s Style, in hopes of finding the #JulyGuy.  We’ve been on the hunt for fun-in-the-sun summer guys with good style, often found strolling city streets, cruising on bikes, hanging on the beach and perhaps, at the helm of a boat.  Even if you don’t know where these guys go or what they do, their look pretty much lets you know.  Some guys look like they never left the boat, while others walk the streets of New York like they just got back from fashion week in Milan.  Then there are the tee shirt guys, who make a simple cotton crew neck work to their advantage.  Each of these guys can be identified by the markings of their style, which we’ve attempted to outline.  These specific styles let you know where these guys go and what they do!  These are the July Guys…

One if by land, two if by sea. Even if he isn't near a boat, his suggests that one is near.

One if by land, two if by sea. Even if he isn’t near a boat, his outfit suggests otherwise.

The boating guy never met a pair of topsiders he didn’t like.  He’s comfortable in khaki shorts and a laid back button down shirt half untucked.  He most likely wears a belt with nautical flags on it, he’s still wearing his rope bracelet from 7th grade and if you asked him which side was starboard, he would know.  Even if he’s not on a boat or near one, he looks like he just got off one and he may tell you his favorite summer foods are Lobster rolls.  For summer eyewear, he throws on Ray Ban aviators.

Even with temps above 80 degrees, he continues to make his sartorial mark on the world in a suit.

Guys who prefer suits are loyal to their look even when everyone else is running around sweating.  These Summer Suit guys are marked by perfectly tailored blazers, skinny ties and heavy-soled lace-up dress shoes and classic loafers.   Summer is a time to get creative with lighter weight fabrics, brighter colors and bold patterns, often topping off a look with a hat for added sartorial expression.  He values a good watch <which he calls a “timepiece”>, a pocket square, vintage tie clips and probably wears a sharp pair of Tom Ford sunglasses.

His style is simple, effortless and he probably has some facial hair.

The Tee Shirt guy is admired for his simple dressed down style and he always manages to look cool.  Anything distressed or vintage looks good on him and he can be marked by a loose fitting crew neck or V neck tee, skinny jeans, relaxed fit cotton pants, a bracelet with beads on it and a pair of vans sneakers or Tom’s espadrilles.  He can often be found reading a good book in a hipster coffee shop and probably has about 4 days of scruff on his face.  The tee shirt guy prefers vintage-looking round sunglasses from Prada, which he considers a worthwhile investment.

Bow-ties are his signature, he owns a pair of pink pants and the Country Club is his stomping ground.

Planters Punch, anyone? Ah, the Preppy Guy, an homage to true Americana style.  He’s always in a fitted button down shirt and “chinos”, he considers Nantucket Red pants a summer staple and he actually knows how to tie a bow-tie.  In his closet you would find shorts that have whales on them, a seersucker blazer and a lot of plaid.  He considers the J. Crew catalog a good read and the 4th of July is his favorite holiday.  Ray Ban Wayfarers suit his sunglasses style.

His heart is rooted in the sand, he loves to surf and he's never far from his backpack chair.

Get on your swim trunks, pull out your paddle ball set, load up your backpack chair and set out to find The Beachy Guy.  The Beachy Guy looks like he stepped off the set of Endless Summer, he used to lifeguard in high school, board shorts are are all he wears and he’s got zinc oxide on his nose.  His cooler is full with cold ones and he’s always up for any activity that happens in the water.  His hair is shaggy and sun bleached and his idea of a good night is getting to bed early so he can get a head start to the beach in the morning.  Because he’s at the beach so much, he always has his shades on, most likely durable and colorful, from Spy Eyewear.

Defining specific style is always about catching the finer details.  The Summer Suit guy always has a good pocket square to lighten the mood, The Boating Guy never parts with worn Sperry Topsiders, The Preppy Guy has good luggage and “summers” somewhere on the weekends and the Beachy Guy only wears SPF as an accessory. So where do all these style archetypes lead us?  To your style…For the month of July, we’re looking for the #JulyGuy and by showing us your style, you have a chance to win one of 4 pairs of Tom Ford Sunglasses.  Share a pic of your summer style in glasses or sunglasses on Instagram or Twitter by tagging @CohensOptical and using hash tag #JulyGuy or visit our Facebook tab to upload an image directly! http://bit.ly/JulyGuyStyle
